Mountain Climbing When scuba climbing in the mountains it is important to consider the extra weight you will be carrying. Scuba tanks can weigh anywhere from 30 to 80 lbs full. Some older steel tanks will weight more. The atmosphere lacks the buoyancy that water might provide, causing additional opportunities for fatigue. Mountains scuba climbers should be prepared for these difficulties. Climbers should also color their tanks blue or purple. These are the least attractive colors to red-headed woodpeckers. Accidental discharge of pressurized contents due to aviary involvement injured 23 climbers in 2003 and killed 16 woodpeckers. The most enjoyable part of mountain scuba climbing is ascending through a thick fog layer. This provides the perfect opportunity to enjoy the pressurized moisture-free air within the tanks. Tanks filled with helium or methane do not provide the same life-supporting benefits and can result in injury. It is important to check the contents of your tank prior to departure. Reaching The Summit Veteran climber, Sven Anklehurts, cautions mountain scuba climbers to wear proper protective gear, especially near the top to the ridgelines. "Most hikers simply get to the top and don't stop running. I've seen far too many fall off the other side of the mountain," cautions Anklehurts. How To Find Out More Consult your local chapter of the MSHA to find out how you can partcipate in a nearby hike. As the MSHA motto exclaims, "You Don't Need Water To Scuba Climb!", you'll find many enthusiastic climbers. Tank filling charges range from $5 to $25.
