This past week my partner of 27 years, and husband of 4 months, were relaxing after our hard day at work,by watching one of our favorite programs on TV called Jeopardy.
During one of the commercial breaks a man in a suit is broadcast into our living room ticking of a list of lies about what would happen should California voters not pass Proposition 8.
He stated that churches would loose their tax excempt status:that is a LIE!
He stated same sex marriage would be required to be taught in public schools:that is a LIE!
Other adds show a distrougt mother greeted by her excited grade school daughter exclaiming "mommy I can marry a princess!"
That is a LIE!
Another add claims "boys can marry boys"!
LIE LIE LIE!
What is TRUE is that it is now legal for MEN to marry MEN,and WOMEN to marry Women- NOT for a BOY to marry a BOY,or a MAN or Woman to marry a BOY or GIRL!
Oh yes it will still be legal for men to marry women and vise vera. Also for a homosexual to marry a heterosexual.
The proposition states this AND ONLY THIS: Changes the California Constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry in California.
Provides that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid in California.
That is ALL it states!READ YOUR VOTER INFORMATION GUIDES!
All of the other scare statements are LIES LIES LIES!
Other lies include that my oriantation is a choice(a lie being perpetuated one of the major parties vice-presidential candidates)
That is a LIE that is believed by those who CHOOSE not to recognize vast studies of science, psychology, and the TRUE history of homosapiens.
That is what is believed by some of those who CHOOSE TO BELIEVE in whatever VOO DOO that is LEGALLY allowed to be practiced under the protection of something called...oh yes-THE CONSTITUTION!
Of course that could all change should one group of tax paying citizens decide to ammend it to denie another group of tax paying citizens "seperate but equal" rights.
One last truth:
The last stats I've seen on the cost of having these rights eliminated is upwards of 40 MILLION dollars.
The TRUTH is that if the focus was TRULY about "the children",those monies would be better spent on finding a cure for a chilhood desease,or finding ways to keep ALL families together by trying to eliminate the TRUE causes of the destruction of the family which includes alcoholism, spousal abuse, incest.
In all my years and miles of travel I have known of friends and family who have divorced.
We all hear of Hollywood celebrites AND POLITITIONS who marry, have children, divorce, marry have more children-in my own circle of that cycle,I do not know of ONE spit-up being caused by a homo-AND THAT'S NO LIE!

Not sure how the thread topic is relevant to the initial post, however, unless the funding for the cited ad was from Lying Christian Taxpayers For Traditional Terminology or something.

But I can understand your anger against political ads. I have never seen a negative ad worthy of broadcast. Ever. But the blame ultimately rests on ourselves, the voters. We allow it. Many even encourage it. If we can legislate against cigarette companies advertising on television, we can do the same for political ads, most of which are more harmful to the populace than a pitch for smokes.
I once spent a week collecting signatures for a ballot initiative aimed at reforming televised political commercials. It was fairly comprehensive (meaning most people didn't want to read it) but one of the ideas was limiting TV commercials regarding proposed laws to the printed text found in voter guides. They would be more like PSAs than marketing productions. Boring, yes, but at least some chance of being informative. The other major reform was restricting candidates' ads to statements about themselves only (i.e. you couldn't say my opponent loves taxes, hates senior citizens, fathered an illegitimate child, sneezes loudly, etc.).
I would estimate that I spoke to over 1000 people that week. I collected less than 50 signatures. Either I am a poor salesman, or voters actually enjoy watching the trash talk. Probably a bit of both.

LeapFrog, if you really want to help our society, I have a suggestion...
Collect all the signatures you can, to tell the broadcast media, stop increasing the volume of commercials by a factor of 100%.
Whew, this gets me in trouble most every day watching the early morning news or whatever, then comes along a commercial with "BILLY MAYES" telling me how badly I need to buy a miracle auger for my garden. Or Old Wilford, stating how his diabetes has been controlled.
This really sucks and I hope you can get it fixed someday...

To the original poster...
If your same line of logic is followed, I would have no problem with all kinds of laws being repealed and done away with. All of the items you mention as "a lie" are not specifically written in the amendment, but are obvious implications if same-sex marriage continues to be state-recognized. For example, you mention that it is "a lie" that school children will be taught about samesex marriages. If the state is to continue recognizing samesex marriage, then true enough....sooner or later the literature will become part of required curriculum in public education; the state will teach what the state practices.
To naively assume that pushing the samesex agenda will stop at proposition 8 failing is errounous. If you observe the pattern, the push is for more and more acceptance of an alternative lifestyle to the point of embracing something only a small fraction of the population practices.

Dear cammed:
Thank you for reponding to my original post.
It seems that this is the season (Halloween) that persons like yourself believe that they have special powers to read into the future from their crystal ball(s). When persons less informed as yourself write about matters by doing very little research then adds a hint of uninformed convincibility it becomes a lie. Because you have access to a computer that should lessen that danger and make you less "errounous" [sp. erroneous] however more informative. You should depend less on special powers you believe you have and deal with earthly facts. I will not demonstrate to you as others have done when posting, to do the job for you but suggest to you as my professors in college say "...look it up yourself.." It is not only knowing what the truth is but where to find it and 80% of the non-emblishments found in this quilting circle they call a "post" demands further singular knowledge.
There is a saying that you should become familiar with and that is, "An empty barrel makes the most noise".

On a lighter note you may want plop down 50 cents for the October 16th edition of the Mountain News, and read the 23 reasons given by some people 75 years ago to try to prevent the radification of the 19th amendment to the Constitution.
Imagine, an amendmend to GRANT rights rather than to deny them.
I wonder how many of the decendents to the benefit of the "19th"
are using that right to deny others theirs today?
"...and then they came for me"

Consevatives honor tradition. They really don't care if it is right or good or even logical.
I don't know if you ever saw the wonderful musical Fiddler on the Roofbut it has a great song in it called Tradition!
It is their creed-- resistance to change. Fear and the need to control are dominant parts of their personality profiles.
It is curious to those that don't have this genetic propensity.
But, with or without logic and a bucket full of lies, they will mindlessly repeat all they have been told for eternity.

News flash. As parents in California we have the right to opt out of any curriculmn incuding health classes and anything that may go against our personal views. We also have the right to deny vaccinations...no matter what anyone else says. These ads are propaganda to say the least. Shame on them.
I for one will vote no on prop 8. I think you will all appreciate the link below, I send it as a reply to the hate spreading mass emails I get from Prop 8 supporters. Gotta love it!
