The Big Bear Sheriff's Station is now recruiting for the Explorer Program. The Explorer Program is open to anyone between the ages of 14 and 21 years of age, who has a "C" grade point average, and who passes an oral interview and background investigation. Explorers are introduced to the police profession while riding with patrol deputies as they answer calls for service. Within one year of being accepted into the Explorer Program, Explorers are required to attend a two week training academy where they are trained in various aspects of police work. Explorers also visit several divisions within the Sheriff's Department including Aviation, Dispatch, and the Coroner's Office. In addition, Explorers attend competitions where they compete against other Explorer Posts in mock police calls and are graded on their performance while handling various scenarios.
Anyone interested in the program should call Deputies Bengard, Montbriand, or Travis Wijnhamer at (909) 866-0100 for more details on the application process.
