So far in the last 2 or 3 weeks, we have had four or five fires that are "under investigation" and there has been no follow-up on the outcomes of these investigations. We really need to know if these were intentionally set or were accidents. I think that good reporting includes a follow-up report! Thank you ROTW for keeping us informed as it happens, but try to bring closure to some of the news events.

No closure adds questions. Watching the news (Local somewhere) there was a group that formed. FIRE WATCH or the like. Seems they can watch the weather and get an idea of the WIND intensity.

Organized with communication equipment, yellow vest and each is a team of individuals screened against nut cases with matches.

They have pre assigned areas of responsibility and man (or woman) the areas till the wind stops. What an idea, now I will wait for all the reasons this is IMPOSSIBLE up here. >let er rip!

Firebugs hide in plain sight. They sometimes do their deed with witnesses who frequently do not react. They also avoid busy areas and start fires which may not be detected until too late. I suspect there is no way to screen out such people by anything other than telepathy. The ring of starts seem to focus from the ridges down to Miller Canyon. Some high, some low. Homes along the ridge and travelers on the 138 need to be vigilant for unfamiliar cars or persons who seem to be out of place. Be prepared to take pictures, with your phone camera or other equipment kept in your car at all times. I have returned my scanner to my car after months of complaisancy.

Panga, I saw that group on the news too. I believe they are down in the area of Trabuco, San Tiago or one of those canyons in the OC that had so many fires last year. I thought they had a good idea. Very well organized and not just a bunch of vigilante yahoo's.

THAT IS WHAT I AM REFERRING.....THANKS

ANYONE THINK THIS WILL CAUSE FIRES?

COULD IT PREVENT EVEN ONE/?

HOW MANY NON FIRE BUGS WOULD VOLUNTEER?

MR OILER (SP) ESPERANZA FIRE WISHES SOME WERE NOT SO OBSERVANT.

TRY THIS;

Next time we have winds and dry conditions predicted for a week long period, why not make efforts to be extra observant.

Coordinate among existing community groups, say the litter picker uppers (sorry) and others, station it like a 5k run.

Scanners , cell phones, radios and the like. Catch these folks.

When a fire is intentionally started...someone started it. DUH a few watchful eyes cannot be worthless.

I'm not quite sure what you are trying to say, but gathering mountain people together for such a thing is hard to do, (i.e. neighborhood watch efforts, for example). It seems that everyone wants someone else to organize and take charge. I mentioned such an idea a week or so ago under General-Incidents and I got absolutely no feedback!

Yes..likeoldstuff and Rcpp, We do understand what you say and being mountain dweller over 30 yrs plus, anytime we hear sirens, (even hearing Helicopters) we automatically look up checking the skies for signs of smoke. Next click on the ROTW icon (especially from work!) sometimes the Thread of Fires or Out of Area Fires show up and sometimes they don't??!?

I have smelled smoke that was not visible from my home and resorted to driving around until I found the source. Sometimes it is just a mystery. The Monument peak fire put out lots of smoke but I couldn't see where the burn was even after driving down Sawpit Canyon Road.

I think that the mountain as a whole just needs to be working together, each in their own way, to be alert and on top of this fire season. This weekend is a free weekend. That means that every fire bug can come up here, free of charge, and roam the mountain looking for a cool place to start a fire. We just have tokeep our eyes open for anything that looks out of place and I think more than anything, if something happen - just take care of each other as we have before and help everyone get their families, pets and necessary belongings off the mountain if need be. In crisis this mountain has bonded together and responded to each other in ways that are quite remarkable, and the love and concern continues to be shown at different times. Now if we could just bottle that up and keep it for the rest of the time.

i have diamondslog.net and i have put up a chat box for anyone to report smoke that you see in our mountain community- if anyone cares. I feel its all our responsibility to watch over our mountain and with going into fire season I am not thrilled of these so called fire bugs that want to see a home or our forest burned down for their weird joy.

Sent: Thursday, October 9, 2008 06:36 PM
They're refering to the National Forest have a "free day" where visitors do not need to pay for an adventure pass.
