I just wanted to express our thanks to the staff at the SB County Hall of Records. We went in on Wednesday morning to get our marriage license. It was early so we were the only ones getting a license at that time. We were greeted very warmly and given help in starting the process. They had computer monitors set up where you could input your information. Then your names came up on a light board with instructions on what window to go to. The girl helping there was very helpful and treated us with much dignity and respect. I have to say this was truly appreciated, because we had no idea what to expect. I have to commend Larry Walker, the Recorder/Controller, for SB county. He did a wonderful job training his staff. They had about 200 that signed up for licenses on Tuesday and since they were geared up for a lot of folks we were told that it went very smoothly. As we were leaving, my partner told the receptionist that had greeted us we had been waiting 32 years for this day. All she could say was "I just love that."
What a contrast with Kern, Calaveras, and Butte counties where they have suspended doing ceremonies for all weddings because of their religious prejudice. It is truly sad for those folks, gay and straight, who can't afford a big ceremony that these elected civil servants are not willing to serve everyone, only those that they approve of. I just wish that if they don't want to serve all citizens that they would not run for office. Hopefully they will be run out of office on their next election. I did hear that in Bakersfield there were clergy who were willing to do ceremonies for free to those who wanted to get married. To me these are the REAL Christians amongst us. Just my opinion!

It's awesome to hear of something good coming out of San Bernardino County.

Could people in other counties have a friend become an ordained minister through the Universal Ministries website and marry them? I have friends who got married that way. They shouldn't have to, but it's a way around the situation while keeping the costs low.

Hubby and I were married 8 yrs ago at the Hall of Records, it was for both of us a second marriage and we didn't want to do a big wedding. The staff was very nice and our little service was sweet and very well performed. Best of love to you and your partner! xox

That is really sweet of you. Thank you so much for the good wishes. We are getting really excited as the day approaches.
I am so glad that you had a good experience at your wedding ceremony. It seems like the employeess at the SB H of R truly enjoy their jobs and enjoy being able to see the happiness that they bring to newlywed couples. Again thanks for the thoughts of love. They are truly appreciated.

It is about time that we are equal. Yet, it is not over. November is the month we have to be worried about. My partner and I were one of the 2000 couple who got hitched in SF...so long ago. We have 2 official marriage certificates from the City and County of SF. He thinks they are just a piece of paper. I say, in 20 years, we can donate them to the Gay and Lesbian Museum of Tolerance (when it exists), to show that we CAN be equal. They are in safe keeping. I know I may not be remembered. But if this valuable piece of paper is in an honorable place, it is what it signified at the time that matters.

I still remember flying from our house in Alameda, to meet my other half at Ontario Airport....Not the "hello, I missed you"....but "we are getting married". Such a greeting. I had to say 'Did I hear you correctly?. He said yeah, we do this before our rights are taken away. (They were taken away)

We finished up what we had to do down here, got a good friend and some stranger to be a witness, and had the honor of having a real judge performing her FIRST gay marriage. It was an event I will never forget. So much applause when each ceremony was completed in SF city hall ( an awesome building to be in).

Suppose that although our marriage is not valid, one can not deny the happiness of two people nor forget that time when the court says 'Yes, you are now man and man or wife and wife"...or whatever.

We have a fight ahead. Do not take our eyes of the goal.
