Hi all- first time I've posted here so be nice to me! lol

I have a kind of unusual situation. I'm a pianist/keyboardist that's been playing for longer than I care to think about, but I haven't done anything in a long time. Mostly I play at home when I have a spare moment and I'm not too tired and I don't have a million other things that need to get done.

Lately, I've been wishing I could do something with my music again, but I'm afraid that what I do (mostly free improvisation) will be hard to work into anything else. I'm not sure where I want to go with this, but I know I want to do something while I still can play. Any suggestions?

Also, I'd love to find a piano to practice on- a real one. I have lots of synths, but it's not the same. Anyone know where I can find one?

Thanks!

Ted

Ted,
You should join the "Sunday Jammers". There is a wide range of expertise there from fairly new beginners, some who had not played for a while but are re-awakening their talent, to some very good players. We sit around in a circle and have 3 choices. Play something, pass or request something from someone else. Those that are pretty good would probably follow along with you as you play. It is a lot of fun and we don't take ourselves too seriously.

George? You're not serious?

Yes, please do come to the Sunday Jam. We're meeting at my place this week. Check out the Skyland Jam thread and leave an e-mail addy if you would like directions or more info.

I need to get my little spinet moved from Arrowbear to here before the snow flies. Then, there would be a piano!

Thank you for the invite. Unfortunately, I work Sundays. I don't get off until around 10PM or so.

Just for my info though- How does the jam session work? What equipment would I need to bring?

I have a terrible schedule (but at least I still have a job!) I'm usually off Mondays and Tuesdays.

I play pretty well, though I'm a bit rusty. If anyone is interested, I do have a decent home studio and am open to jamming at home. I have eclectic influences- I grew up in the '70s so being a keyboardist I was listening to ELP, Yes, EARLY Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc. Then I got into jazz and I have been heavily influenced by Keith Jarrett. If that sounds interesting to anyone, send me an e-mail- tedluk@charter.net

Thanks again!

Hi Ted! At the Sunday Jams we play mostly accoustic instruments. Lot's of guitars, some Mandolins, a couple Autoharps, bass's, sometimes a Cello and/or fiddles! Photog plays a keyboard and his is on battery. There's always a place for one to plug in a keyboard or bass as needed.

Those of us who have the space, take turns hosting. Our group started out as "4 guys and a bag of chips", at least that's what I've heard! It's taken on a life of it's own and can be as many as 25-30 people. It's a social gathering...Pot Luck and BYOB...as much as a Jam!

Unfortunately, for some, the size of the group has taken away some of the intimacy, but who wants to turn anyone away? Not me! We use the Guitar Circle format and each person has the opportunity to Play, Pass, or request something from another player. Some of the players are good at getting an actual Jam going by giving the others the chords or maybe even a copy of music to follow. Some players have more of a performance quality when it's their turn.

All kinds of music is played!

Some of the folks would probably be interested in a smaller Jam, say at your place, and do get together at times other than at the Sunday Jam. There's lots of talented and nice folks who come.

Hope this answers some of your questions.
