Here you go johnny.

Been quite a while since I've been to visit the monks at St. Andrew's Abbey in Valyermo. Our church used to work the fall festival every year helping in their ceramics booth. But I always enjoyed going up there when there wasn't thousands of people. They live a very peaceful, prayful life.

I used to have a collection of Palestrina and Monteverdi, etc. On LP's back in the 60's. Unfortunately it disapppeared in a move made back in 1974. Then there were the Mozart Masses, but they are kind of over the top, so much pomp that the simplicity and reverence of the Mass is lost.

To show you how far "music" has drifted lately, try listening to the latest from Bruce Springsteen, YUK! What happened?

Raven and I are 46. We have 3 grandkids now, and nowadays we say to each other: "the music today SUCKS! Haven't these kids ever heard of Led Zeppelin?"

I can see it now, Great grandpa Johnny, 86 years old, lecturing my great grandchildren a la: "You kids call that MUSIC?!? BAH! HUMBUG! Why IN MY DAY we had Guns 'n Roses and Metallica. Now that's REAL music!" LOL

Of course, our grandparents said the same thing about Tommy Dorsey & Benny Goodman. Time sure does fly...

PS: One thing I love about being a grandpa in this day and age is that it IS pretty funny when my 9 year old granddaughter tells her friends "My Papa plays guitar better than Eddie Van Halen!" HAHAHA

Sorry to hear about your record collection, Rog!

I agree with you that Mozart is over the top and distracts from the Mass.

Go figure: I listen to everything from John Coltrane to Metallica, but when it comes to Church music some people would call me a certified fuddy-duddy...and that's fine by me!

Gimme Palestrina and Monteverdi ANY day...THOSE guys knew how to write music that gives us a glimpse of heaven!

The new Springsteen is awful?

We're bordering on the same age johnny but I'd be more likely to say Elton John, Billy Joel, you know the mellow ones...Of course, then there's always my country favorties. But Guns N Roses would be topping hubby's list, not mine! Springsteen would be on my list, but haven't heard his new stuff yet.

I love Elton John!

Ah yes, "Bennie and the Jets", the soundtrack to my first ever slow dance at the neighborhood teen center...over 30 years ago...YIKES! LOL

Oh yes, time flies! My favorite album is Captain Fantastic! Not just the music but the album itself. I think sister got to keep all the Elton John albums. Now I only have the CD, not the same visual effect!

They interviewed Springsteen last night on TV, and gave a sample of his latest work. He screetched and yelled, no voice quality whatsoever. What happened to him? I remember him from, well, let's say, a few years ago. He could sure perform back then.

I was at his Born in the USA tour in another lifetime. Ex-hubby was very into him at the time, took "Trapped" song to heart! But funny now that they are both in Jersey...ex can hardly stand him anymore. I believe he said Bruce needs to just "shut up and sing" apparently too much into politics for him. LOL!

Anyway, any local events at churches up here? Egads! I've been in tiny, jerkwater towns in the middle of Kansas and they have something going on! Do we have a gene pool problem up here? Seriously, what do they do up here?
Sent: Monday, July 28, 2008 05:42 PM
I'm not quite sure what you're looking for Roger. Most church events I would think would be more centered around Christmas or Easter. Summer seems like it would be a slower time for those things.

Photog, If you see a need then act on it. It seems obvious to me after reading your posts that you must be just the person this mountain needs to put a concert together.
Better yet, how about a local mountain worship gathering/conference/jam?
