Sun Newspaper subscribers:
How can you people swallow the lies and rumors regarding their delivery problems? As an ex district manager I can tell you that the distributors that left in January did not leave without paying all of their drivers.
They paid the drivers a more than fair wage and tried their hardest to provide all of you quality service for the 3+ years that they owned the business. If you want to point your little plastic fingers, try starting at the top. The Sun expects drivers to be available from midnight to 10-11:00 a.m. every day, 7 days a week, and then claim that this is only a supplemental income source worth 00/mo. max! Open your eyes and you'll see why your service is consistently poor.
On the avg.a driver spends /nite on fuel, ]]-5/day for maintenance & /day for insurance. Let's use The Sun's "model"
of 00/mo for a route which = /nite. This driver is now working for -15/nite for a minimum of 5 hours/nite in good weather and in the winter months 8-10 hours.
When is the last time any of you worked for [[-2 per hour?

I gotta back that up! A while back, I figured I'd try my hand at the "supplemental income" provided by paper delivery... What a crock! For working 4-5 hours (the most ungodly of!), one can almost make enough money to cover the gasoline and vehicle expense. Of course, ya bust your tail, your car gets filthy (you ever see how your hands get dirty from reading a newspaper? Yeah, that gets all over your car when you have a couple hundred of 'em with fresh ink piled into your car!), and you are gonna be tired for the rest of the day.
So delivery service sucks... that's why. Same reason you don't get "maitre'd" service at "Mickey'd's." If I were still delivering papers (my career in that industry lasted about a week.... just didn't seem to make mathematical sense), I'd be mad about my daily net loss, and probably wouldn't care all that much about extending myself in order to provide top notch service!

Keep in mind too...that The Sun is so thin now, it can be read in 5-10 minutes!

Also, the days of the daily PRINTED paper are dwindling.

The Times printed the circulation numbers for across the nation this week. Daily subscriptions are shrinking dramatically...as many are solely reading the news online.

40 dollar tip at Christmas gets my paper to the front door every morning. Try it.

THE SUN???? NOOOOOO!!! Somehow they got my home phone number and telemarketed me miserably!

We gave up on the Sun when the Business section got down to 4 words and a Staples ad.

Printed papers should die out very soon. Hopefully. It is a stupid waste of paper. TV news really stinks, but news is available from so many sources now. There are very few people who NEED a wasteful, physical paper.

BTW, The Sun is so riddled with mistakes that I use to pull articles out of it to use as teaching exercises.

Less important than the medium used to obtain the news, is the content, analysis, research, corroboration of said news. When you rely on audio transmission there is no opportunity to read again sections that are convoluted or illogical to determine if the conclusions are valid. Superficiality is the rule for most broadcast information. Sources are important and intellectual rigor and the quality of discerning fact from fiction by reporters and those who review their work are critical. However, if your involvement in receiving the information is passive and restricted to one pass audibly, much can get by.

How many times do you hear the end of a story when a key word gets your attention and you wish you had been paying attention earlier. You can't go back like you can with printed media.

Long format reporting as exists on NPR, BBC, CSPAN and a few others is critical for more detailed information along with graphic supporting information. When such sources are recorded and you can replay whatever seems appropriate, the opportunities for clarity are greatly improved.

Who said anything about audio? There are printed sources available widely that do not waste resources. Television and radio have gotten more about shocking and entertaining than news reporting. Every decent newspaper in existence is available in printed, paperless form.

There are people out there who don't have a computer for one reason or another. My husband and I still like to read newspapers even if they are dwindling to nothing.

Completely agree with and follow you.

Yet, the reality across the country is that more and more readers are moving to the online version.

With that...MANY papers have been forced to cease, and/or solely publish online.

A lot of the problem also, is that the papers' advertising revenue has dropped dramatically, given the economy. The real estate and auto ads have been noted as those that have dropped the most. Hence, the papers losing money.

The Press Enterprise ceased home delivery on the mountains a few years back. The Times has threatened to do the same over the years.

I believe we will still have The Sun...as it is "San Bernardino County's Newspaper".

Well, I for one, like to set down in the morning with a cup of tea and read the papers. We get the Times and the Sun. I find lots of little stuff in there that I probably wouldn't see on the net. Besides, my couch is alot more comfortable than the computer chair. Long live the papers!

But the Alpenhorn. They print once a week and every thing you need to know, is right there.

I love to read the daily paper and do the crossword but do not like to do the online version. I do the crosswords in ink and love when I don't have to cross anything out! I will miss the paper if it goes away

Not only did the Press Enterprise cease delivering papers to homes in our mountain communites, they also ceased to deliver to the stores and newspaper racks in the community as well. That sucked because the PE does a lot better job on reporting local news out here than the Sun does. I am down the hill quite a lot during the week and pick up my Press Enterprise at one of the businesses on 40th Street or read it on the internet.

Any delivery problems The Sun has they have always had. Several years ago did a 6-week trial with them. Ran all of Nov. and first part of Dec. In 6 weeks 8 papers weren't delivered or turned into a soggy mess because they weren't put into plastic. Though I called and was assured they'd be replaced only two were. (They did manage to get the paper into the bags the next two days that were clear and dry)

Then as my offer is running out I get a form letter and envelope from the delivery person stating a Christmas tip would be nice as they had done such a great job all year.

For two years after that I had to field calls from The Sun's telemarketers. I told them I would not sign up and told them exactly why and that I never wanted to hear from them again. Took two years for that to sink in.
