I find it hard to believe that people can not find constructive, legal things to do here. So far the only "lacking" thing people stated they want is trips. Well, maybe the parents could take the kids on trips. Why send them unsupervised into the amusement parks, etc? Especially with what recently happened with Rim High's visit to Disneyland, I think it would be better for the kids to have parental supervision at these places.

There is lots more to do than hikes. There is swimming or playing in the lake or streams, renting boats, watercycles, etc on the lake, going to one of the parks, going to the movies, hanging at the pizza shop, going to the library, riding a bike or motorcycle, going to the skatepark or alpine slide, even going to the zoo!

And if the parents can afford it, there are sports groups and many, many things to do with parks & recreation. There are also several dance classes and martial arts classes at studios. And if you can think of an activity you want, parks & rec will probably be able to find an instructor to offer it!

And nationwide, what is the major recreational activity for teens? My guess it they spend more hours watching tv each week than anything else. (Yep, I do expect Roncpp to correct or verify this guessed fact...)

Why can't one expect the parents to supplement the publically available recreational activities for their own children? I bought mine bikes, scooters, ride-on fire truck, a swingset, etc to keep them busy. As they get older, I expect them to want more things, but I expect to provide the things, not the taxpayers. Afterall they are MY kids!

Everyone is different and you can't expect everyone to be the same. At amusement parks, beaches or wherever they would go, there would be shapparones. Sorry if I mispelled. Personally, I don't have problems keeping my kids occupied, but that's because I have the time to do things with my kids. There are some households that have two working parents and leave kids at home or with sitters. It would be nice to have something for these children or teens to do weekly. There is nothing wrong with doing things elsewhere. Personally, I even get bored on the mountain. there are many places to take day trips to even if it's going to another lake.

and again, it's not the taxpayers money. It's your own money. If my son were a teenager and wanted to go to the beach with the community. I would pay for him to go and I would probably shapparone because that is the kind of thing I do. I would definately let him do weekly events.

Remember the old saying "It Takes a Village to Raise a Child", well I think that would apply here. I have no problem paying for my own children, but let's face it, so many people can't afford more than the necessities. I think that a community center is a great idea, and what little tax money it would take from each of us, would save in the long run. After all, we wouldn't have bored kids just hanging around possibly causing trouble or costing money. As a community, everyone should look out for each other! The world, or at least the mountain would be a much happier place!

There are some good churches up here that have active youth groups. My kids loved going to youth group at several different churches. They are free and usually have fun things planned for the summer. It's good clean fun!

That's all fine and well if your child is Christian. I wouldn't expect a child coming from a non religious back ground or a non christian back ground to be only able to have structured and safe fun within a religious setting.

Kids don't have to be Christian to attend these things. And if they don't come from a religious background, what can it hurt? They might learn something they never heard before. As for other religions, maybe they should start their own. These are fun things for kids, not seminaries.

No they don't have to be Christian...but church gatherings are not subsitutes for community centers from which all children can benefit.

My children aren't Christian and they know about the religion. They know about every religion. Church groups inevitably try to influence those they come in contact with. I have taken my children to every kind of religious organization and temple I could find. We continued to attend for a time and discussed what we heard and thought. I have tried to raise them to understand the beliefs of others and be open. I don't want them to hate because they don't understand. However, we have noticed that most forms of Christianity are very pushy. They don't really want to spend their time feeling like they have to defend themselves for their choices and beliefs, which is how they have most often felt in church activities. They can hold their own, but don't feel like they should have to with something so personal.

I'm not trying to start a religious war, though I probably will. I am just pointing out that people should have choices that they are comfortable with and religious groups are not always comfortable. Communities with activities for people of all ages are better off. Kids everywhere, cities and small towns, will complain about how they have nothing to do. It is the nature of being young, especially teenagers. Parents can teach kids alternatives, but then they sometimes need a place to practice these things they've been taught. That is where the community comes in. Provide an adequate venue.

I can't believe how little this community is willing to help. DTH the ball field had clay donated by a company with no kids playing. Sponsors of banks, businesses and public figures with no kids playing were common. We had people who came out on their own time every year to work on the fields and get them ready. They didn't get paid and they didn't all have kids playing. They just cared.

That's true. But not is all cases. These groups can sometimes just be fun. Ingorantly, I sometimes distance myself from people just because I know what religious group they belong to.

There are quite a few churches up here that are not pushy.I stay away from pushy people no matter what their faith is. There are so many sports groups up here also from baseball to soccer too. Kids find out how to have fun when they get together. I was talking about youth groups because they already exist. Kids don't need to wait, they can go now. My son loved the Rim High choir back in the day. For several years we belonged to the Lake Arrowhead resort spa. There is swimming and full use of the exercise equipment for a small monthly seasonal fee. We all loved that and used it as a family and brought our kids friends for a small added fee for the day. You are only limited by your own creativity.

My son has suddenly decided he wants to play tennis. He is done with baseball, hated soccer, isn't interested in football or basketball...

Is there anything I should know about the tennis courts in Crestline? Are there restirctions on who can use them and when? We were going to take him out and start showing him the basics. That's what I meant by the community providing a good place. I can't have a court, baseball field, etc. in my yard, so it is nice to have a place to go.

I heard you can just show up and then wait your turn at that court in Crestline. Sometimes you can play at the high school courts if they are available too, or down in Perris Hill Park.

I've never heard of a fee for the tennis courts. I think it's first come first served. And Lake Silverwood is very inexpensive for the day. We used to go 3 times a week all summer. We just brought a huge cooler and brought our own drinks, lunch and snacks. If you can include your kids friends it's all the more fun for them.
