I have some whole wheat sourdough starter & a great bread recipe for it. Anybody want some??? I know it has been tooooooo HOT for bread baking. I'm running out of room in my fridge need to give some away. The recipe I have takes close to 2 days from start to finish. You can plan ahead to bake the bread after dinner when you should be out of the kitchen. (just an idea!!)

Be careful with the whole wheat starter...it can easily go rancid. When I did bake bread...before the baby (and I will get back to it again...there's just not time now), I had various sour dough starters. I found in this kind of heat, even when you regularly feed the whole wheat, it goes bad. So I just did those starters with white flour, but made the bread with a combimation of whole wheat and white flours. If your starter turns pink and smells like vomit (sorry to be graphic), run for the hills! It is not to be used and should be tossed. A healthy starter will smelly hoppy and beer like.

Can't you freeze it? I heard that you could, but now that I write it, it doesn't make sense.

you can refrigerate sour dough starters. If it's an Amish Friendship Bread starter you can freeze it.

I have 3 kinds of starter in the fridge. I just feed it once a week. I usually let it sit on the counter for an hr or so before I feed it then back in the fridge. I made the starter almost 2 yrs ago & haven't baked lately so I have lots. You can keep it in the fridge alive as long as you feed it every week then wait for cooler weather toi do some baking. The whole wheat one only needs a couple of TB of WWflour a week.
