I am looking for diabetic recipes that taste like real food. Any suggestions?

LOL, me too, so far I've decided to increase my insulin and eat what I want (j/k)! Glycemic index is a good guideline.

RS Granny - I don't know if you've ever looked at the Low Carb diet, but it's sugar-free. I was a diabetic and, after 4 months on Low carb, my diabetes is GONE! And, my cholesteral has gone down to 158 with the HCL, LCL and Trigs all in perfect places. Glance at the Low carb thread, maybe? There are a bunch of ideas on sugar-free type cooking there.

hey Peg, My mom was diagnosed with diabetes & she said that she's having a helluva time with foods & her diabetes is not under control. She can't have ANY sugar. Now while she can stand to lose a couple pounds, dad cannot, he's a twig. So not sure if the low carb diet would be good? Mom's 80 & dad is 93, if age matters? Thank you!!

RS_granny stay with high protein and low carbs. Eat lots of good fiber and low sugar. Stay away from the diabetic items that have sugar alcohols, they through my Dad's sugar through the roof. If you have not done so already attend a class on diabetic cooking.

Good Luck.

I've found discrepancies in my meters readings, and it's brand new...cripes 447 & then I immediately recheck it with the same meter & it's 100 pts. lower...

I only take 20u of Lantis at night, blows me away how it can be 106 one morning & eating the same type of food the next day it's 200-300.... drives me knutz!

Not just foods, but good rest, exercise & pleanty of water helps lower it as well...

And the battle rages on:(

DD, I just came back to this thread and saw your question about whether an LC diet would be good for your folks. Sorry so long in answering. As far LC is concerned, it's not necessarily for weight loss. It's a lifestyle. You can go on LC with the motive to be cutting out sugars, refined flour products, preservatives, simple carbs that turn into sugar without having it be about losing weight. I need to lose weight, so that's MY motive. But, if it's not about weight loss, it's about eating purely and sugar-free. So, I think your folks could do LC. They don't have to count carbs, which they'd only do if they were losing weight. Hubby isn't losing weight, but he still eats LC just to maintain and eat healthier. Does that make sense?

Rowan, Has your doctor ever considered putting you on an insulin pump? When my son started using Lantus he also had to take shots of Humalog every time he ate. He had to test at least 4 times a day. I hope you are able to work things out.

RS Granny, there is a magazine called Cooking Light that my son's diabetes clinic recommends getting recipes from.

It sounds like you have Type 2 diabetes. My son has Type 1 diabetes for which there is no cure and he must live with it. I have heard that if you can manage your diet with Type 2 that, in some cases, taking insulin can be avoided. Hopefully that can happen for you. My son was 5 years old when he was diagnosed and he is 17 now. He hasn't had the complications yet and hopefully we can keep it that way. By the way, his being on the pump means he only has to insert an infusion set every 3 days, so not as many needles. He still must test himself several times a day.

My husband had done really well with Type II diabetes. We watch his diet and basically stick to a low carb diet. I do have to watch him because he will cheat when he can. And he has the problem with the meter giving different readings. If yours is new - take it back and ask for another one! A lot of people report trouble with the meters.

My fishing partner has diabetes.

The only thing he shares with me regarding doctors advice is " I need to eat".

lol... he has paid the price for only hearing that part! 17 heart attacks and counting

Fortunately, DH is in good physical shape. He cheats on some things but he really has been good with the diet. He is very healthy and I don't worry too much about the diabetes. He just happens to like potato chips! I give him a small bowl instead of a whole bag like he used to eat! His readings are really pretty good even when he cheats! He has not needed medication so far!
