Finally, that patch of hiway 18 right past red rock where it stays shady is where my truck slid on some ice around 8 am last winter. I wasn't even speeding, I thought for sure I was going over! So happy that's getting done! That was scary!

So much nicer than a stoplight...

I really hope that stop light NEVER happens. What a nightmare.

Why do I think that the nightmares are happening real soon???Cal Trans is a bunch of hard heads( no,not hard hats)that don't care about Public opinions or the Public. This keeps their employees, employed.

Cal Trans! Why not line the 18 and the 330 and what ever other roads may need them with guard rails and forget the ridiculous Idea of a stop light??? A red light will cause accidents and death to where guard rails may save lives. If we write letters to Arnie, do you think he'll listen? noooooo!

Ok, so this is something I was wondering. I have always thought that the guardrails are so low, that I wondered how much it really does? Does it really prevent someone from flipping over the side of the mountain if someone hits you hard enough? Just wondering. It seems that they could make them much taller, and still allow a view?

Buy a lower, more efficient car.
If you think we all want our scenic byway have a fence put around it so only you high profile vehicles can see anything, think again. or slow down. Sorry, I just can't believe after all the bitching about not having guardrails, that people are now complaining that they're "Not Tall Enough!" Geez!

This isn't a toy bumper car arena. You have to take some chances.

Twila, you are so right about not having to speed to lose control on black ice. I hit black ice and was only going 10 mph or less after turning from a stop sign and totally lost control of my SUV which was in 4 wheel drive with hardly any snow on the ground. After hitting a stone wall head on my car was totaled, my arm was completely crushed and both of my knees were busted. The black ice can sneak up on anyone, speeding or not so please be careful.

Just a question. And actually, no one answered it. Just curious if it helps enough. I see people flip over all the time, and die on that beautiful scenic road that you are talking about. And since I am one of the slower drivers, I do not take offense. They should slow down. But it doesn't help the ones that are hit by these idiot drivers. And anyway, just a question, not complaining as one put it. I often wondered if maybe something see through or partially see through that would help more in the bad areas. Going up to Tahoe and other mountains, they are not near as dangerous as on 18, but they are much wider and it takes a lot longer to get up in elevation with hardly any cliffs on the side.

I think the guardrails are just fine. Anything there to block your car from just going rite over especially in the fog.

They might not stop your average Hummer but they stop most any other 4WD

And, anyway, when it's your time to go, NO guardrail or anything can save you! It's just your time. PERIOD

well, in reality, even guard rails twice as high aren't "fool" proof...lol.
http://www.break.com/index/dangerous-guardrail-crash-test...On a brighter note, here's more fuel for the "size doesn't matter" argument...

twila,
You think the same way I do. When it's your time to go it doesn't matter where you are or what you're doing.
When the man above calls your name that's it!!!
Personally I think he gave me 9 lives because I have had 4 close calls already!!!

Crash test for cable barriers.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woZeuFKEn-Q&feature=re...These would offer lots of visibility for the 'sceanic drive' folks. I have seen one test where the car zoomed through like there was no barrier, but it looks like they were placed too far apart.
