Oh Abba, I have seen so many people come into the clinic who refuse to put their dogs on Heartworm preventative for one reason or another. So many of those same people came back for the treatment when their dog tested positive. I hope for your dogs sake that we aren't on here in 6 months telling you "I told you so". Good Luck.

We did attempt to use it, never again.

People have to learn by their own mistakes. I do hope you get your dogs tested for heartworm yearly, so if they do get it, you will catch it early. And you might want to start a little "heartworm treatment" savings on the side. Its not cheap.

I nearly lost my previous and beloved female Husky, Shasta, to Heartworm Disease. The treatment was horrible and expensive. I choose preventative medicine...nothing is without risk...but doing nothing is not an option.

I could spend 10 minutes posting statistics about how many animals have SUFFERED and died from heartworm disease, But instead I will give you personal experience. I worked in the veterinary field for over 10 years and I have seen 2 dogs die from the result of taking preventative meds, I have seen hundreds contract the disease. Some were treated, for some sadly, It was too late or too expensive for the owners to afford. Unfortunately symptoms often do not arise until the disease in in the late stage. 10 plus years- 2 dogs vs hundreds!! You choose.

Found this info on SC Collie rescue-thought I'd pass it along:
Important news bulletin: Collies and many other herding breeds are sensitive to certain drugs, some with normal doses that can be fatal . Washington State University has developed a simple testing kit to screen for the mutant MDR1 gene. For more information please go to their site at www.vetmed.wsu.edu/VCPL/
