Hi,

I don't regularly follow this board, but get the sense that there are folks here who know many of the local dogs up for adoption, and I'm hoping that someone will keep us in mind. Our last dog was a formerly abused shelter dog - doberman/shepherd mix - who we adopted at age 6 and who lived with us until he died at the ripe old age of 13. We've moved around some since then but will be settling into a new home in a week or two and will then be on the lookout for the right new pooch.

We have two boys, ages 2 and 4, and one cat, so will need a dog who's good with kids and kitties. Our last dog was a male, and we have a slight preference for a female this time. We'll be living in a large house near the national forest trails, and are big-time walkers and joggers, so would prefer a larger breed/mix who would enjoy a good amount of outdoor exercise and play. Both my husband and I work at home, so the dog would have considerable companionship during the week. We aren't in the market for a real puppy, but either a young or older dog would be fine. Money isn't really an issue, so a dog that needs some up-front (or even ongoing) "maintenance" would be ok. Some exclusions: my husband has tinnitus/sensitive ears, so we can't have a big-time barker or "yippy" dog around (barking at the occasional squirrel or passer by is ok). And with both of our workplaces in the house (and hosting clients, etc.), we can't really deal with a destructive or questionably house-trained dog, or one who jumps and barks incessantly when someone comes over. We also travel about 3 times/year for a week, and a few overnights as well, so the dog would need to be amenable to dog-sitters and/or good in the car for long trips.

We are not in a big hurry, but please keep us in mind if any of you come across an energetic but gentle and well-behaved, quiet-ish dog that might be a good match for us. denisecwhitty@charter.net.

Thanks!

Hi there! this is not a large breed dog-she's a brussels griffon. she's 3 yrs old female spayed, current vaccines, potty trained, how ever, she needs a surgery on both ears that costs about $800. Due to this unfortunate cost & possible maintenence, her owners are unable to keep her. She is wonderful & loving, and needs a loving family that can pay for her surgery. If your interested please contact me @shmorris1@verizon.net & I'll send pictures. Please specify it's regarding "Sprout".

How funny! I just posted Sprout on another thread. Thanks Ceasarfan! Holly just called me last night and is so sad about this since Sprout was just recently adopted by her second family and the people just don't want to deal with the ears anymore. So sad. She really needs a forever home that can meet her needs.

MrsB....Please go to the website of Dogs needing homes....there is this Black & Tan medium sized GREAT TEMPERMENT little fella that KNANDRMUELLER is trying his best (he & his wife) are trying to either locate missing owners or at least come see this fella to foster & potentially own him!! He is adorable, My Husband & I went to see him, (yet with our male & vertical fence which he might be able to squeeze out of) with heartfelt sadness, we had to decline taking him. So please do go to Dogs needing home thread, and maybe this might be the match you are looking for!! Again hes a very happy fella; you can see he wants to please!! I hope this might be what you are looking for!!!

Hi everyone.

Wanted to bump this post; it's me, the OP, again. We have, not surprisingly, had a long series of distractions with our move, summer, start of school, etc., but are now REALLY ready and looking for that dog! Prefer ages 1 to 4, in addition to what I wrote before. Would love to take one home as soon as we can find the right one. I see lots of potentials on the shelter website in terms of good breeds, ages, etc., but does anyone know anything about their personalities? The boys and I could go visiting this afternoon, even, but I'm not sure, if we went to a shelter, if they are generally staffed up with folks who really know the dogs and can help. I want the dog to meet my boys and vice versa, but I don't want to take a chance with dog aggression from a really unknown dog, since my boys are small (2 and 5). Ideally I'd prefer a dog who is currently being fostered for this reason - so that we would know more about the dog's personality.

My mother's dog will be with us from this Tues on (for a week), and I would like our potential new dog to meet my Mom's dog, if possible, since we do visiting, dog-sitting, etc. so it's important they get along. She is a very old (12+) Siberian husky, who generally gets along well with other dogs.

Thanks!!

Denise, I too have a 2(now 3) and a 5 year old, so I know the concerns that arise when looking to add a fur member to the family, especially when you are thinking of a possibility of one from the shelter to which you may not know the past. So, thought I may shed some light if possible for you. I fostered for about a year and a half and have probably had 6-8 dogs from the shelter (San Berdo) in my home in that time. It is really a tough guess on what to expect, especially since it takes dogs true personality a few weeks to really come out once they have adjusted to the change. Sometimes the shelter has info on the past of the dogs, but most times they don't. I think you are smart to look at a dog being fostered first. Only because it is tough to tell a toddler not to do certain things to a dog when they are excited and you will not know for sure the reaction. I don't want to discourage shelter rescue by any means, but especially since you have another dog for the newbie to meet, it may be easier to set up a meeting, get more info, etc. I hope some of that helped and wish you the best of luck finding a new member to add to the family.

Oh and it is also easier to find out about whether or not the dog gets along with cats or not since the shelter can't do that. Plus, I like to have dogs meet away from the busy, shelter as it can be overly distracting in my opinion.

go to Mountains'Humane Society's website. www.mountainshumanesociety.com Click on the ADOPTIONS tab on the top page. Scroll down to the referral adoptions, there are quite a few dogs available. Xena, Odie, Hannah, Nico and Roscoe all sound like possible matches.
