I walk dogs three mornings a week at the Redlands city Animal Shelter. These are dogs that need good homes and if not adopted and room runs out, they are euthanized. In the time I have been volunteering, I have lost quite a few of my dog friends and it is very sad. But I keep on walking them, because even if they are not there the next day, I know that I have given them love, affection and a good walk on grass and they got out of their kennels and into some fresh air. If you are looking for a dog, please come to Redlands. The shelter is located at Park and Kansas. Take the 210 to Redlands, exit at San Bernardino, go straight and turn left at Lugonia; turn right at Tennessee and then go straight one block past Redlands Blvd to Park, turn right and then it's the first right. The shelter is on the corner. Right now there is a great variety of dogs....this morning I walked a shepherd mix in Kennel #1, then a cute little small shepherd mix in Kennel #5, then one of my favorites, a black/white Aussie (but could have some Border Collie) in Kennel #8. He's a doll. His owners had to surrender him because they lost their home. He is great! Kennel #26 is a greyhound mix that has a story. When he first came in with his brother, he was fine and dandy until I tried to walk him. He was traumatized somehow...he would walk then collapse (no physical problems). I would have to set him upright and then he would walk and then collapse. The first three days we got out to the grass in the front and would sit together and watch cars go by. He was a nice sweet dog and I would put my arm around him. Then we'd go through the same routine back to the kennel. His brother was adopted, but he was not. He's been there about a month, and he has graduated to a full walk. He is a very happy sweet dog. Riley is in Kennel #19 and he's a shepherd mix who is very nice. Kennel #21 is a fawn colored pit mix with a white band around her neck. She is hilarious. I have found pits to be sweet, goofy love bugs. She walks and then will stop, I pet her, and then she rolls over on her back and she does what I call the "roll around" several times. Then she's back up and is ready to go back to her kennel. Funny! We also have lots of other dogs, too numerous to mention....but definitely worth your time to drive down to see. Adoptions are ONLY $63, which includes the basic shots (not rabies) and the spay/neuter. What a deal! They do not accept credit cards; only cash or checks. Cats are $37.
If you adopt from Redlands, you would definitely be saving a life and getting a wonderful pet. I adopted my pit mix in March and I've been extremely happy with her. Thanks!

Thank you for posting this, and for volunteering so much time to help homeless dogs. Have you ever thought of posting photos here? It may help some of them get adopted. It breaks my heart that so many animals are dumped at shelters, how anyone can keep letting their dogs have puppies is beyond my comprehension.

I've heard that the animals at this shelter actually get some vet care? Is this true? SB City Shelter has no vet, and most of the dogs are sick, many die from lack of medical care. They also don't protect the dogs from the elements, and in the summer, it gets over 115 degrees. I've heard that the Redlands Shelter also has many volunteers, and they are treated well, is this true?

If you ever need help in trying to post these dogs on Craig's List, I can show you how to do it. It's pretty easy, somewhat time consuming, but we've found some good homes for the dogs, although many are still put down.

I'm VERY interested in learning more about your experiences with this shelter.

Unfortunately Redlands doesn't post many of their dogs on Petfinder.com, but I could post the few that are listed. Yes, if you could help me with the instructions on posting their photos, that would be great!
Redlands does provide limited vet service to the dogs. The little black/white guy in #8 has some wounds on his back from hot spots and they keep him well shaved and vasolined up, although that is provided more from the vet tech staff at Redlands than a vet him/herself. I have seen dogs with stitches though and I know they have sent dogs to their vet, as there was a GSD sent once.
The staff at Redlands care deeply about these dogs. There are two Animal Control Officers, Bill and Rubin. Then there are two or three vet techs, Lisa and Kerri (who manages the kennel). They all try their best to find rescues to take dogs also.
YAPS (Yucaipa Animal Placement Society) takes dogs from Redlands every month or so. I emailed them about Molly, who was a gorgeous pit mix, whose time was running out. Molly was my girl and I championed her to the staff, begging and pleading to save her. Each morning I walked her double the length of any other dog, gave her massages to quiet her soul, and lots of love. Bill, the ACO, knew I was working with her so she wouldn't turn. When a dog turns kennel crazy, they are immediately euthanized. He told me that he was depending on me to tell him if it happened, which I promised him I would. Fortunately she didn't. Finally in May I was told Molly only had about a week left because she had been there since January. I emailed YAPS again and this time was told they might have room. They took her! I was so happy that I offered to volunteer for them too. Molly was just adopted last week to a home in Yucaipa! The woman who adopted her left a message with YAPS staff to thank me for working so hard to save her life so she could adopt her! I was very pleased.
It's not easy walking dogs at Redlands because dogs that have bonded with me and look to me to get them out of their kennels just disappear. I used to ask about dogs, but have stopped because it is so sad. I took the first couple of deaths so hard; came home and cried and cried, that I thought I should find another shelter. But the dogs need me. And, let's face it, I need them too.

dogwalker,
I highly respect what you do, and understand your heartbreak knowing when animals are put to sleep.

If you would like help in learing how to post these dogs on
Craig's List, please post your email address here, and I will contact you. You can always delete your posting after we are in touch if you don't want your email to be public. I should be around on Sunday, and we can talk then if you are free, and would like to talk.

Dogwalker, do you still want help? I'm trying to figure out what to do next as far as volunteering, and I may be able to help, depending on the circumstances. Please email me at LLknorr@msn.com if you are interested.

We are looking for a smaller dog (smaller than 85 lbs) and would love to see pictures of the doggie in Kennel 1. I didn't even know Redlands had a shelter! I work at the high school and could go there often!!! Thank you for sharing, I'll spread the word. Pictures would be awesome too!!! When school starts I could go by and take pictures too.

I thought Redlands was a no kill shelter?
