If we were to accept that humans are (in general) the most intelligent creature on earth, what would be the second most intelligent creature? From what I've seen the most popular candidates are either primates or dolphins. Personally, I would place several species of parrots at the second spot on the list (ie, african greys, amazons). Their vocalbulary/ communication skills are unmatched and their complex problem solving skills are much more advanced that many realize.

What do you think?

I have a yearling amazon I got at weaning. He's as smart as my five year old easily. He asks for his "breakfast", "thirsty", "can I come out?" "good morning", "good night", "treat", "toys", "SHUT UP (the dog)", "see my pretty feathers (during a stretch)" "bath", "bye bye (in the car)", "berry!(the rabbit) when I feed the rabbit, etc... and more and more.. All used accurately and properly for exact communication. He's my feather son. And he's very much a toddler, tantrums and all!!

He is not just repeating stuff, he says these things in the proper context and when he needs/wants something... He also sings songs and does do some impersonations of all of us for fun. We laugh, he hams it up!

Oh, and I think birds DO retain a tie with the second spot, over chimps, with something else, I forget what... The raven and crow genus specifically are actually the smartest, which blue jays belong to..go figure....

yearling amazon Momma, do these bite?

I think second most intelligent would be sharks maybe.

no, he doesn't bite, unless you are teasing him, then it's to be expected. he's great with the kids and the dog.

sharks? not likely, they have peanut brains, but their sense of smell and agility is pretty cool

ants outnumber EVERY animal/human combined weight and number.. they are the largest group of creatures on the planet... ants will inherit the earth! ewww
