Late Season Storm Brings Snow Above 5,500 Feet

By Scott Straley
Friday, May 23, 2008

Twin Peaks, CA — A slow moving storm system continues to frustrate weather forecasters. With a spate of severe weather on Thursday, including several tornadoes in the Moreno Valley, today's precipitation has become more widespread as temperatures continue to drop. Rain and snow are expected to continue to fall throughout the mountains through this evening, with fog, drizzle, and occasional showers persisting overnight. Saturday should be a little warmer, with a few peeks of sun, but showers and thunderstorms may return in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

As of early this afternoon snow was falling and sticking in Twin Peaks, Lake Arrowhead, Green Valley Lake, and the Big Bear area. The National Weather Service has issued a Snow Advisory through 8 p.m. tonight for up to 4 inches of snow. However, with the current precipitation banding on the National Weather Service Radar, some areas could receive higher amounts.

Thunderstorms with lightning, gusty winds, hail, and flooding rains or brief heavy snow, could return later this afternoon and evening as the cold core of the storm system adds to the instability of the atmosphere. Flood watches have been issued for the lower coastal slopes after two days of pounding rain. Rock and mudslides have been reported, and mountain highways are susceptible to additional rockslides, especially during and after heavy rains. Numerous accidents have occurred along the 15 Freeway today due to the rainfall and dense fog.
