Red Flag Warning in Effect Until Midnight for Dry Lightning Isolated thunderstorms with dry lightning have been occurring over the desert areas since 6:00 am. Thunderstorm Threat To Continue Through Next Week A moist flow of monsoonal moisture will continue the threat of thunderstorms through next week. Chance Of Thunderstorms Through Midweek Monsoonal moisture will flow into the area this afternoon through at least Wednesday and cause isolated thunderstorms to develop across the mountains and foothills. While the increase in humidity and cooler weather will slightly inhibit the fire danger in areas without thunderstorms, gusty winds and lightning will increase the danger in other areas. Fire Weather Watch In Effect Through Tuesday Morning A tropical wave moving across the region tonight may generate scattered thunderstorms that would last into Tuesday morning. The air mass is expected to remain quite dry between 1,500 feet and 15,000 feet through Tuesday morning, making wetting rains unlikely, and dry lightning possible over much of Southwest California. West of the mountains at elevations below 1,500 feet the marine layer is expected to keep the air mass moist enough to suppress any lightning started fires. Read More... Mop Up Continues On 30 Acre Squints Ranch Fire A late afternoon fire sent firefighters and aircraft scrambling to an area of mostly grass and chaparral about 3 miles to the east of Lake Arrowhead late Monday afternoon. The so-called Rouse Meadows Fire was first reported shortly after 6 PM Monday, according to U.S. Forest Service Public Affairs Officer John Miller. The fire was fully contained by midnight. Additional State Route 18 Paving Project Caltrans will begin another paving project to restore deteriorated pavement on State Route 18 (SR-18) just five miles east of State Route 38 (SR-38) from Cactus Road to Snubbing Post Grade Road (north-east of Big Bear). Alert Neighbor Leads To Arrest An alert Crestline resident notified sheriff's deputies Wednesday afternoon of a possible residential burglary of a neighbor's home along the 24-thousand block of Great View Drive. Deputies from the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Station arrived soon after the call, along with the Sheriff's Department Helicopter, and found David Edward Wilcox, 36, of Crestline exiting the residence. Firefighters are on scene performing a "cut and rescue" with the jaws of life to extricate the victim from the collapsed cab of the vehicle. The condition of the victim is not known at this time. State Route 18 Paving Renews Road Caltrans will rejuvenate the deteriorated pavement on State Route 18 (SR-18) from State Route 189 (SR-189) to State Route 330 (SR-330). The rubberized asphalt-paving project will begin on Monday, June 11 and is expected to be complete by the end of July 2007, weather and material supply permitting. Read More... Big Bear Sweep Yields Drugs and Guns During routine parole and probation compliance checks, Thursday, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputies made four arrests for drug and gun violations in the Big Bear area. Smoke From Extinguished Hesperia Fire Drifting Into Mountains Smoke from a fire that occurred Thursday evening near Cajon Summit will drift into the mountain communities west of Lake Arrowhead. The fire, which occurred just north of Wednesday's fire, consumed about 10 acres before firefighters extinguished it. Cajon Summit Fire "Knocked Down" Firefighters have a hose line around a brush fire that was burning along Highway 138 in the Cajon Summit area around 2:20 PM on Wednesday. Various reports place the so-called Railroad Fire at 10 to 15 acres, and up to 40 acres. A Pair Of Minor Earthquakes Rattle Nerves A pair of minor earthquakes were centered near Devore on Wednesday night. There are no reports of damage. A 3.8 magnitude earthquake occurred at 11:11 PM followed by a 3.9 earthquake occurring 4 minutes afterward, at 11:15 PM. The earthquakes were centered near Glen Helen Regional Park. Fatal Accident On Hwy 18 Claims Life Of 60 Year Old Man A driver, reported to be a 60-year-old man, was killed in an over-the-side accident along Highway 18 south of Crestline around 1:30 PM on Wednesday. The vehicle, a gray 4-door sedan, appeared to have left Highway 18 from the large turnout near the 4,000 foot level of Highway 18. No further details were available regarding the victim. Read More... Deputies Arrest Suspected Pedophile John Malcolm Grimson, 40, of Big Bear City was arrested at his home on South Monclair Drive last Thursday, May 10, after allegedly committing sex crimes against a minor, according to Sheriff's spokeswoman Tiffany Swantek. According to reports, Grimson, a maintenance worker, is 6'2" and 240 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes, according to the arrest records. Read More... No Homes Lost To Little Mountain Fire "No structure were lost" in the Little Mountain Fire, according to San Bernardino City Fire Department PIO, Mike Arvizo. There are no evacuations in place, and containment is expected by 10 PM tonight. Suspicious Object Found In Crestline There is no word from authorities on what closed Old Mill Road for a few hours on Monday afternoon. A suspicious object had been found near Old Mill Road and Highway 138, around 11:30 AM. One first responder characterized the device as appearing to be a "homemade bomb." Authorities Unearth Grave In Cedarpines Park In October, 2006, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs was contacted by an informant claiming Mark Lee Christian, 51 yrs old from Las Vegas Nevada, was fraudulently collecting Veterans benefits from his father. The informant reported Mark Christian failed to report the death of his father who died in March of 1999 in a motel room in Las Vegas. Mark took his father to an isolated area in the San Bernardino Mountains and buried him, and continued to collect his benefits in the amount of about $1,000 monthly. Read More... Fire Near Jenks Lake 100% Contained After a brief battle with winds and terrain, firefighters have once again gained the upperhand in fighting the so-called East Fire. It was declared 100% contained at 1 PM according to Forest Service spokesman John Miller. The fire, which quickly grew to five acres is burning to the southeast of Jenks Lake Road East in the vicinity of East Flats. A wind shift had firefighters concerned when the fire escaped a shaky containment line. It then continued to burn in light vegetation toward the southwest, but a heavy assault of aircraft quickly stopped its progress. Missing Youth Counselor Rescued Near Snow Valley After a cold night alone in the wilderness with periods of light snow, missing youth counselor, Genesis Henderson, 27, of Cedarpines Park was found Monday afternoon by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue Team. The missing mother of two had been hiking with a group of eight people, both counselors and juveniles, when she became separated from the group just before dark. Henderson is a counselor for the Clearview Treatment Center, a service provider for youth offenders. Three Fishermen Die On Big Bear Lake Three Southern California fishermen reportedly drowned while visiting Big Bear Lake overnight. Winds and choppy water may be to blame. The men, James Swanson, 73, of Escondido, Everett Richard Price, 76, of Escondido, and Romaine Maiefski, 70, of Oceanside reportedly went fishing on Big Bear Lake near the Dana Point area of Fawnskin around 11 PM on Thursday. However, at some point during the night their boat capsized and the three men drowned in the frigid lake waters. Temperatures were near freezing overnight and snow began to fall towards morning. Now four cows have been reported along Highway 74 at Mile Marker 77. Overturned Flatbed On Highway 18 Below Crestline A large flatbed truck carrying a non-hazardous cargo overturned on Highway 18 around 3:30 PM on Wednesday about a mile below the Highway 138 exit to Crestline. The truck was blocking at least one of the upbound lanes of Highway 18. There are no injuries. News Blog - Tuesday, April 17, 2007 Firefighters and Sheriff's deputies responded to a medical aid incident at Lake Drive and Forest Shade Drive. An individual called to report a subject with lacerated wrists, but upon arrival neither the Sheriff's Department or the caller could locate the subject. Crestline Woman Killed On Highway 18 A fatal accident occurred along Highway 18 just to the west of Pine Street on Tuesday at 11:35 AM. According to the San Bernardino County Coroner's Office, Heather Kay Bachman, 33, of Crestline was traveling southbound on Highway 18 behind a white construction truck. The construction truck side-swiped a northbound tractor trailer carrying roof trusses, causing lumber debris to fall on Bachman's vehicle and spill into both lanes. Witnesses said that it appeared that Bachman suffered a fatal head injury, causing her 2002 Ford Explorer to veer over the side of the roadway and about 150 feet down the embankment. Read More... Lytle Creek Fire A brush fire, first reported at 10:51 AM on Friday, quickly grew to about 2 to 3 acres by 11:10 AM. The fire crested Gobblers Knob in a remote area above the Lytle Creek Shooting Range located near Lytle Creek Road and Coldwater Canyon Road. However, upon investigation, it was determined to be smoke and dust generated by ATVs in the area. Snow Showers Create Icy Roads; Accidents A frontal system is bringing snow showers to the mountain areas this morning along with fog and drizzle. Snow was reported to be falling in Lake Arrowhead at 11 AM and at Onyx Summit at Noon. There is the potential for black ice, according to the CHP. News Blog - Wednesday, April 11, 2007 A red car, previously reported to be driving recklessly, was involved in a solo vehicle accident near Onyx Summit on Highway 38. A Forest Service patrol was first on scene of the accident and the driver was uninjured, but expressed an interest in leaving the vehicle. Search Winds Down For Over-The-Side Motorcycle The search for a possible motorcycle over the side of the roadway in Crestline winds down without any victim located. Shortly before 2 PM Tuesday, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department received a call from a Running Springs resident stating that his wife had just witnessed a red and black motorcycle drive off the road. Reportedly, the motorcycle was going in excess of 100 miles per hour and did not brake when it left the roadway around a left-hand curve. Read More... News Blog - Friday, April 6, 2007 An injured party walked into the Crest Forest Fire Station 25 in Crestline. The party was the victim of a previous traffic collision of when his bicycle slid into a parked vehicle. Firefighters responded to this earlier call at 4:09 PM near Fern Drive and Shady Lane, but were unable to locate the victim. The victim was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. Motorist Attempts Suicide On Highway 330 A driver along Highway 330 attempted to commit suicide shortly after 10 AM on Friday by driving his vehicle 30 to 40 feet over the side of the highway near Long Point, about four miles below Highway 18, according to the responding CHP officer. Firefighter Attacked By Would-Be Intruder; Suspect At Large A San Bernardino National Forest firefighter was attacked by an alleged intruder at the Waterman Canyon Forest Service Fire Station shortly before 3 PM on Wednesday. News Blog - Tuesday, April 3, 2007 Sheriff's Deputies responded to a verbal altercation and possible hate crime at the 7-11 parking lot in Crestline at the intersection of Lake Drive and Lake Gregory Drive. Two-Year-Old Succumbs To Crash Injuries On a foggy morning, a female motorist lost control of her Dodge Neon on Highway 18 near Heaps Peak on Tuesday, April 27 around 8:30 AM. The Neon crossed the center line and collided head-on with a full-sized Dodge pickup truck. Within moments, four or five other vehicles were involved in the thick zero-visibility fog. A tractor trailer struck several of the vehicles and fled the scene. Three people were injured with 2 victims requiring immediate CPR, including the driver's 2-year-old daughter, Brittany Jepson of Lake Arrowhead. Read More... News Blog - Monday, April 2, 2007 A brush fire was reported next to the Cornerstone Baptist Church and a Skate Park along Sheep Creek Road in Phelan. Multiple agencies were dispatched to the fire including County and California Department of Forestry engines. Structures were reportedly briefly threatened. The fire grew to about an acre and a half with a moderate rate of spread in moderate fuel before firefighters were able to knock it down around 3:50 PM and contain it by 4:05 PM. Officials are investigating the cause of the fire. One firefighter suffered minor burn injuries fighting the fire. Read More... Fire Starts In Forest Saturday, Burns Away From Mountains A wildfire that erupted late Saturday morning in the Los Flores area of Hesperia rapidly spread to over 1,400 acres. The fire initially prompted authorities to evacuate about 200 homes in Hesperia. As of Saturday evening, evacuations have been lifted. The fire was reported to be 5% contained late Saturday afternoon. Authorities expect the weather to cooperate and have the fire fully contained by Sunday evening. Read More... Upon arrival authorities determine that the man had attempted suicide. Fire Weather Watch The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for the inland valleys and lower coastal mountain slopes late Sunday morning through Monday evening for low humidity and local gusty winds. Pile Burning in the San Bernardino Mountains The San Bernardino National Forest began the winter pile burning program recently, burning brush and debris piles in the San Bernardino Mountains and will continue to burn throughout the winter when weather permits. Wind And Snow Showers Through Wednesday (11 PM) The National Weather Service has issued a Snow and Blowing Snow Advisory for blowing and drifting snow above 3,500 feet through 2 PM Wednesday. Additionally, they expect up to 7 inches of snow to accumulate about 4,500 feet. Running Springs Brawl Leads To Attempted Murder Charges An early morning brawl at 2300-block of Rim of the World Drive in Running Springs Monday morning led to the arrest two beaten suspects while deputies search for a third. Around 1 AM Monday morning Travis Quinn, 26, allegedly held Timothy Benninger, 25, of Highland, on the ground and struck him in the head with a shovel, rendering him unconscious. In retaliation, Karin Pfannkuchen, 32, of Highland, struck Benninger in the head several times with a beer bottle. Benninger then allegedly pushed Pfannkuchen to the ground. Deputies Arrest Fleeing Drug Suspect Deputies from the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Station arrested Roman Timothy Marquez, 48, of Lake Arrowhead early Thursday morning for possession of methamphetamine. According Deputy Eugene Collins, Marquez was seen "traveling at a high rate of speed" on Highway 18 shortly after midnight. Paint Seized From Hilltop Liquors in Crestline Deputies from the Twin Peaks Sheriff's Station responded to Hilltop Liquors in Crestline Friday afternoon after complaints from area residents. A recent rash in vandalism in the area led the Sheriff's Department to send out compliance letters to area businesses informing them that spray paint and felt tip markers must be kept in a locked and secure location and only made available upon request. Besides being used for vandalism and graffiti, paint and markers are often inhaled for their drug-like effects.
