Crestline, CA - Twenty-five tons of new sand was brought to the shores of Lake Gregory in preparation for the Ninth Annual Sand Sculpture Contest.

As the last "hurrah" of summer, adults and children alike are encouraged to bring their creativity, pails, shovels, straws and tools to Lake Gregory Regional Park to vie for top prizes in the 9th Annual Sand Sculpture Contest August 31 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will be held at the north beach entrance of the park. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and is free with the paid park admission of $3 for persons ages 4 or older

There are 25 available spaces for artisans to create their noteworthy sand sculptures. The spaces are available on a first-come basis and up to six people may sign up per space. Four categories will be judged: Adults only; Adults and Children; Youth 13-17 years old; and Children 12 and under. In each category, prizes will be awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places.

Over the years, this event has drawn participants from all over the Southern California region. Last year the first place winners, Brad and Kiersten Wall of Temecula won for their creation "Airliner Flying to the Pyramids" in the adult category.

Winning first place in the Adult and Kids category were the Taylor family of Lake Arrowhead for "Turtle Soup." San Diego residents Kyle and Melanie Beddow, Anna and Tilly Farreel and Michael Shadown recreated a "Fishing Derby Winner" in the sand to take home the top prize in the Youth category; and Jake and Ryliegh Dark, Austen Reader and Steven and Scott Turnbell of Crestline were the winners of the Kids 12 and Under category for their ambitious sculpture of "The Sphinx."

The Sand Sculpture Contest is sponsored by: Baker's, Fiesta Village, Sportsman's Warehouse, Goodwin's Market of Quality, LaCocina De Tony's, Round Table Pizza, Ace Hardware, Lake Gregory Beach Club and Happy Sailing.
