Poll Workers Needed for General Election

Bilingual Volunteers Sought

By Michael P. Neufeld
Wednesday, August 27, 2008

San Bernardino, CA – The San Bernardino County Registrar of Voters needs people in the mountain communities willing to serve as poll workers during the Tuesday, November 4, Presidential General Election.

At 7 a.m. on November 4, all polling places in the county will open for voters to cast their ballots in the very important Presidential General Election.

Spokesperson Kathy Jackson issued a press release urging registered voters in Big Bear, Lake Arrowhead and Running Springs areas to step forward to help staff the various mountain polling places.

"No experience is required," Jackson's release stated, "poll workers will be trained. They must be a citizen of the United States and a registered voter."

San Bernardino County pays $100 for clerks assisting voters on Election Day, plus $15 for a two-hour training class. Bilingual poll workers will receive an additional $10 if they are fluent in English and Spanish. Inspectors earn a stipend of $135 plus $30 for a 3-hour training class.

Classes are held throughout the county at various times and locations.

Election Day hours are 6 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The polls are set-up between 6 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. and are open to voters at 7 a.m. The polls close at 8 p.m. and closing procedures may take up to one hour to complete.

Poll workers duties include assisting in the set-up of each polling place, greet voters, locate voter on roster, issue voting materials, direct voters to polling booth and if necessary, demonstrate to the voter how to mark their paper ballot.

Interested individuals should call the Election Services Division at 909-387-8300 or 1-800-881-8683.
