MAST Mailing Fire Safety Packet
Includes Newsletter, DVD and Safety Guide
By Michael P. Neufeld
Thursday, July 3, 2008
San Bernardino, CA – Over the next few days, residents in the San Bernardino Mountains will receive an information packet about fire safety from the Mountain Area Safety Taskforce (MAST). The packet will contain a newsletter, fire-safety video and fire-safety guide.
NEWSLETTER
The latest edition of the MAST newsletter, "Lookout - Summer 2008," contains fire-safety tips, checklists and information for those who live, work and play in the San Bernardino County Mountains. Headlining the contents of the four-page circular is an article about a 2007 study confirming that creating defensible space saves property and lives. Also included in the newsletter are articles on Fire Safe Councils – what they do and how to get involved; Deer Lodge Park – a defensible space case study; evacuation tips; homeowner checklist; community buffer zones; contact information for public safety resources; and Southern California Edison's reimbursement program.

FIRE-SAFETY VIDEO
MAST created this 10-minute, fire-safety video (DVD), "Defensible Space: Safeguarding Your Home from Wildfire," to demonstrate how to create defensible space around homes and other buildings, as well as steps residents can take to make their homes and out-buildings fire resistant. The video may also be viewed on on-line on the MAST website in the San Bernardino County/Fire Prevention section.
FIRE-SAFETY GUIDE
MAST and the Arrowhead Communities Fire Safe Council produced a foldable fire-safety guide to help residents prepare for a disaster and potential evacuation. The small, four-by-six-inch Z-CARD is small enough to keep in a car or disaster supply kit. The Z-CARD unfolds into a large evacuation resource and includes evacuation route maps, a survival checklist, contact information for public safety resources and emergency alert radio stations.
